Picking a language to learn can be hard. If you have no connections to a particular country or region of the world but still want to expand your linguistic skills, it may be hard to find a language that you feel a connection with.

One option would be to choose a language that is very popular, or many people around the world speak it. This can expand your map of places to travel.

In order, here are the most popular languages in the world:

  1. Mandarin Chinese – 955 million speakers, primarily in China and Taiwan.
  2. Spanish – 405 million speakers, prominent in the Americas and Europe.
  3. English – 360 million speakers, primarily in Europe and the Americas.
  4. Hindi and Urdu – 310 million speakers, primarily in India and different parts of Asia.
  5. Arabic – 295 million speakers, primarily spoken across the Middle East and parts of Asia.
  6. Portuguese – 215 million speakers, primarily spoken in Portugal, Brazil, and various parts of South America.

Learning any of the above languages could expand employment opportunities in your country and abroad! You can also choose the primary language spoken in a country you have interest in traveling to as well.

Be specific.

Don’t be vague when figuring out how to learn a language. Saying “I want to learn French” isn’t good enough.

Do you want to learn how to understand French well in a French setting? Do you want to be able to speak French fluently and be able to study abroad in France? Or do you just want to learn passable tourist French?

Establish you language learning goals before beginning. This way, you can work towards a goal while maintaining how much time in a week you will be dedicating to learning a language.

If you just want to learn how to speak Mandarin Chinese so you can impress a native speaker with a few phrases you know, you won’t want to spend five to six days a week read, writing, and listening to Mandarin Chinese lessons.

Break up your goals into smaller ones as well, especially if you’re figuring out how to learn a language for the purpose of traveling abroad and fluency.

Set a goal to be a conversational speaker in five to six months, or whatever goal you think is doable for you. Just jumping into language classes or books without goals and structure will be unnecessarily difficult.

Invest in decent language apps.

The beauty of smartphone technology is the plethora of apps you can use for just about anything– organization, health monitoring, and language learning.

One of the best free language-learning apps out there would be Duolingo.

This handy app has an extremely user-friendly interface. The courses for different languages are mostly designed by native speakers, so you know you’re getting to most concise and thorough lessons possible– for free!

Duolingo also provides daily goals for whatever level of a language you’d like to learn. The app is also designed for language learners who aren’t native English speakers as well.

Hello Talk

You can correct each other’s wording in the app and essentially tutor one another in the language you both wish to learn.

While the languages Mindsnacks provides is minimal, it is still a very useful (and cute!) game-based language tool to use if your target language is available in the app.

Mindsnacks features a ton of minigames with adorable graphics to help you practice your listening skills as well as your vocabulary. The lessons are simple, but great for practicing when you’re on the bus or when you’re itching for a game to play before bed.

Stick to major language learning tricks.

Consistency is key when learning a new language, and these simple “rules” to follow on your journey are easy to remember.

Consider writing these down where you can easily access them when you sit down to practice your language lessons.

  • Learn the right words the first time. Don’t rush through your language lessons, as this will only extend the amount of time it’ll take to grasp words. Go back, try again, and review words you are having trouble with when you first encounter them.
  • Learn your cognates. Cognates are words that mean the same thing in a different language as they do in your native language. Memorize these “twin” words first, as they are typically the easiest.
  • Enjoy the vast world of multi-language YouTube. To familiarize yourself with fluency, the way things are said, and different accents in the language you’re interested in learning, start watching vlogs, films, or shows in your target language. This is a great way to get fluent in a language.

These simple rules are great for beginners as well as advanced language-learners.
